History of AFPSA
In 1985 a group of lumber manufacturers
in Alberta expressed concern over the high rail transportation costs from
Alberta mills to markets in the USA. With encouragement from the Alberta
Government, a task force of lumber producers was formed to study what
options were available to minimize transportation costs.
The resulting report recommended the
formation of a Forest Products Shippers Association who would negotiate
freight rates on behalf of its members. It was to be a non-profit company
owned and directed by the members it serves. In 1986 Alberta Forest Products
Shippers Association {AFPSA} was incorporated under the Societies Act of
Alberta.
How the Association Operates
Membership in AFPSA is voluntary and is
limited to companies who have a manufacturing presence in the Province of
Alberta in the forest products industry. This includes primary as well as
secondary and tertiary manufacturing. Products include- lumber and lumber
products, plywood, OSB, medium density fiberboard, and wood pulp. Once a
manufacturer has joined the Association, they are free to use all of the
services provided. They are, however, not obligated to ship with us even
though they are members.
Each member pays a modest annual
membership fee plus an upcharge for each shipment arranged by the
Association. AFPSA is a non-profit company and any funds remaining after
all costs have been covered are distributed back to the membership on a
pro-rata bases.
